Far North First Thing 2010

The Far North District of New Zealand, as its name 
suggests, is the northernmost district within New 
Zealand, consisting of the northern tip of the North 
Island.

This is the largest of three territorial authorities 
making up the Northland region. The district stretches 
from the capes and bays at the northern tip of the 
Aupouri Peninsula past Ninety Mile Beach to the main 
body of the North Auckland Peninsula, where it 
encompasses both the Bay of Islands and Hokianga.

It borders on the Kaipara and Whangarei Districts, which 
are the other two territorial authorities in the 
Northland Region.

Population

The district includes the towns of Kaikohe and Kaitaia 
in the north, the cluster of towns around and inland 
from the Bay of Islands (Kerikeri, Paihia, Russell, 
Opua, Kawakawa and Moerewa), and the cluster of small 
settlements surrounding the Hokianga Harbour (Omapere, 
Opononi, Rawene, Panguru, Kohukohu, and Horeke).

The district has 58,000 people (June 2009 estimate),[1] 
of whom 40% are Ma-ori. Over the last 10 years the 
district's population has defied national (and 
worldwide) trends by becoming increasingly rural. The 
largest town is Kerikeri with a population of 5856, 
followed by Kaitaia with 5202, and Kaikohe, the seat of 
the District Council, with 4113.

Local government

The Far North District Council was formed through the 
amalgamation of the former Counties of Mangonui, 
Hokianga, Whangaroa and Bay of Islands and the Boroughs 
of Kaitaia and Kaikohe.

Neuseelands. Er befindet sich an der Nordspitze der 
Nordinsel; Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts ist der Ort 
Kaikohe.

Der Far North Distrikt ist der größte Distrikt der 
Region Northland und schließt die nördlichsten Gebiete 
des neuseeländischen Hauptgebiets (also Nord- und 
Südinsel, sowie kleinere umliegende Inseln) ein. Dabei 
erstreckt er sich von den Landzungen/-spitzen (die 
berühmtesten sind Cape Maria van Diemen sowie Cape 
Reinga und das North Cape) und Buchten im äußersten 
Norden der Aupouri Peninsula über die bekannte Ninety 
Mile Beach bis hin zum Zentrum der North Auckland 
Peninsula. Hier grenzt der Far North Distrikt im 
Südwesten an den Kaipara-Distrikt und im Südosten - 
durch das Cape Brett abgegrenzt - an den 
Whangarei-Distrikt. In der Nähe des Grenzpunktes der 
drei Distrikte befindet sich mit dem Waipoua Forest 
eines der größten noch vorhandenen Kauri-Waldgebiete des 
Landes. Während der Distrikt im Westen an die - meist - 
geradlinig verlaufende Küste zur Tasmanischen See 
grenzt, befinden sich an der Ostküste zum Südpazifik 
zahlreiche Buchten, die wohl berühmteste ist die Bay of 
Islands.

Von den 57.400 Einwohnern leben nur etwa 4.000 in 
Kaikohe, dem Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts und gut 5.000 
in Kaitaia, nahe dem südlichen "Startpunkt" des Ninety 
Mile Beach. Die meisten übrigen Ortschaften befinden 
sich entweder direkt an oder nahe der Bay of Islands, 
einem beliebten Urlaubsziel. Die größten von ihnen sind 
Kerikeri, Paihia, Russell, Opua, Kawakawa und Moerewa.

Etwa 44% der Einwohner sind Ma-ori. In den letzten 
Jahren entwickelte sich der Far North Distrikt - noch 
mehr als die Region Northland - zu einer landesweiten 
Ausnahme in Bezug auf die im ganzen Land zunehmende 
Verstädterung: Es zogen wieder mehr Menschen in 
ländliche Gebiete.

Die zwei dominierenden Wirtschaftszweige sind die Land- 
und Forstwirtschaft sowie der Tourismus. Letzterer 
konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf die Bay of Islands 
und weitere Buchten sowie auf den Ninety Mile Beach und 
die nördlichen Landspitzen. Im ersten Wirtschaftsbereich 
wird vor allem der Forstwirtschaft eine erfolgreiche 
Zukunft vorausgesagt, da die internationalen Holzpreise 
immer weiter steigen.
